Contact: Russ Curry, russ@curiousmusic.us curiousmusic.us Curious Music is pleased to announce the October 6 digital release of Music for the Film Invisible Hand by Heavy Color. A vinyl release will follow in January 2021. Executive produced by actor Mark Ruffalo and directed by award-winning filmmakers Joshua Pribanic and Melissa Troutman, Invisible Hand is the world’s first documentary film about the Rights of Nature movement, which critics call a “paradigm shifting” story about the global battle between Nature, capitalism and democracy. Ruffalo has spent years as a water defender and environmental advocate. “More and more, we are waking up to the fact that the world around us is being poisoned,” Ruffalo said. “The water, air and land have become toxic dumps, and the law is rigged against us.” Cradled in both Haudenosaunee prophecy and free market economic theory, the result is a film that asks, “If a corporation has rights, why can’t an ecosystem?” Drawing inspiration from nature, Heavy Color composed much of the score for winds, strings and voice, something of a departure from the dense electronic approach of their previous releases. Joining Cohen and Woldenberg on Music from Invisible Hand are Patrick Booth (Clarinet, Bass Clarinet and Soprano Saxophone), Mike Savina (Electric Guitar), Wesley Hornpetrie (Cello), Jeffrey Niemeier (Violin and Electric Violin) and Estar Cohen (Vocals).

ABOUT HEAVY COLOR

The modern-music ensemble Heavy Color was founded by composer-producers Ben Cohen and Sam Woldenberg. Their often surreal and cinematic compositions explore spiritual jazz, traditional music, electronic and avant-psychedelia. Their first album Arise Ye Spiritual Machine (2014) re-contextualized archival music in a modern beat-tape format. River Passage (2018), a collaboration with musicians in Eastern Congo that combines elements of Afrobeat, minimalist Electronica and futurist Hip Hop, spans physical environments, cultures and languages. The project began in May 2015 when Cohen and Akili Jackson (Radiant City Arts) traveled to the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo as musical ambassadors for Earthwork Music. A three-year creative exchange led to the release of River Passage, a portion of the proceeds from the sales of which fund EDRC projects that support gender equity and fair wages for women in farming regions as well as an arts center for youth in the city of Bukavu that provides a safe space for teaching dance, recording technology skills and music lessons.

Earlier this year, Heavy Color was commissioned by the investigative journalism collective Public Herald to compose the score for Invisible Hand. In addition to the music for the documentary, Heavy Color will also release Soft Light, a recombination of 70’s fusion, acoustic and electronic meditations in pattern-based music, and psychedelic pop.

ABOUT THE FILM PREMIERE

After years of production the much anticipated online premiere of Invisible Hand is happening on September 4, 7:00 p.m. Mark Ruffalo will join a public discussion immediately after the screening with directors Joshua Pribanic and Melissa Troutman plus Rights of Nature experts featured in the documentary. The group will open up a Q&A and talk about how this movement can actually create needed systemic cultural change.
