Curious Music is pleased to announce the limited-edition vinyl and download release of Nordlicht by Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Carl Michael von Hausswolff.

This release comes in a limited issue of 500 copies on 180-gram clear vinyl in a matte varnish sleeve. Included is a high resolution, numbered art print and download card. The vinyl was pressed by Memphis Record Pressing in Memphis, Tennessee. Nordlicht is also available as a stand-alone MP3 or lossless FLAC download. Vinyl also comes in a bundle packaged with a triple-blend t-shirt.

The four pieces on the record were originally intended as informal creative exercises born from a shared curiosity and mutual interest in collaboration. Instruments include piano, sine wave generators, synthesizer, EVP vocals, and on “At The Island,” a field recording of the nocturnal sounds on the shore of the Spanish island of Lanzarote. The abstract nature of the work and idiosyncratic sound sources are somewhat reminiscent of Roedelius’ earliest efforts with the experimental groups Human Being and Kluster.

The German electronic music legend and Swedish multimedia artist first collaborated in early 2016 on a project instigated by Hausswolff entitled freq_out 12.  The project was a temporary sound installation located in the notorious city sewers of the Vienna canals where the movie The Third Man was partly filmed.

Roedelius states of the collaboration:

“I first met CM in Vienna by the shore of the river where the most famous actor Orson Welles was shot when he tried to escape from being hunted by the police for crime. We didn’t recognize each other in the dark. Later, at University of Arts in Vienna, CM taught me to play music from scores as I had been unable to do this since I became a composer/musician. He became my teacher, good friend and co-operator in the field of all contemporary and pre- and past- historic arts and especially the art of Nordlicht.”

For over eight decades, Hans-Joachim Roedelius has found creative expression in numerous disciplines as a composer, musician, poet, sculptor, painter and singer with results that have inspired a generation of musicians and artists. Best known as a member of the highly influential electronic groups Cluster and Harmonia, Roedelius released his first solo album, Durch die Wuste, in 1976, the first of many solo and collaborative works that has grown to number almost 200 albums. Roedelius continues to give performances worldwide and release several albums per year in addition to work in theater, dance, painting and poetry.

Roedelius lives near Vienna, Austria.

Since the end of the 70s, Carl Michael von Hausswolff has worked as a composer using recording technology as his main instrument and as a visual artist using light projections, video and still photography as well as other media. He has exhibited at dOCUMENTA (Kassel), the biennials in Venice, Moscow, Liverpool, Istanbul, Sarajevo etc and in Copenhagen, Stockholm, Nicosia, Kaliningrad, Tokyo, London, New York, Philadelphia,  etc.  His music has been played in festivals such as Sonar (Barcelona), CTM (Berlin), L’audible (Paris), el niche Aural (Mexico City), MUTEK, (Montreal) etc. He recently curated the 12th part the sound-installation freq_out in Vienna and collaborates with artist Leif Elggren, film-maker Thomas Nordanstad, EVP re-searcher Michael Esposito and recently launched new projects with composer/artist Mark Fell, musician Jim O’Rourke and author Leslie Winer.

Hausswolff lives in Stockholm, Sweden.

Curious Music was founded in 1988 by Russ Curry, releasing numerous CDs and records, promoting tours and administering licensing and publishing agreements. The label worked primarily with artists (solo and in various configurations) such as Dieter Moebius, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Conny Plank and Roger Eno. After a period of dormancy lasting almost 16 years, Curry rebooted the label in 2017, with a focus on creating unique, high-quality limited-edition releases. The label places its artistic collaborators on equal footing with the audience, the unifying characteristic being a shared curiosity for exploring the creative moment.

Our mission is to inspire and nurture the curious spirit – one curiosity at a time.
